This was the sketch I originally did for this week's painting, "Shaken not Stirred". The sketch was okay, but I thought it could use a little tweaking. I thought it might be better if the head was larger and the body was smaller, but I didn't want to re-draw the whole thing... So, I used a photocopier to alter my sketch (it is such a fabulous tool for artists). I made the head 10% larger and the body 10% smaller, then I glued the pieces together in my sketchbook (making the neck smaller too).
Voila! A drawing that I felt comfortable turning into a painting.
The physical difference isn't huge, but I think the impact is!
Don't forget to visit Sophia's blog to see what my friends have been up to this week!
I never thought of enlarging and reducing a finished sketch...great tip, thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove the larger head on the cat, btw. It makes a difference.
I'm with Ileana, I would have never thought of using a copier. I would have redrawn the whole thing. lol
ReplyDeleteGreat sketch and the painting turned out very nicely.
Guess we all learned a new trick this morning, thank you. The finished product does indeed look better, it is amazing how such a small tweek does make a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteWow - I need to experiment...what a difference.
ReplyDeletecheers, dana
PPF was great fun - I am still trying to get to everyone - my darn job just takes up too much time! lol
Mwhahahaha! Isn't technology wonderful for creating shortcuts. I've been known to do do things like that. I scan them into the computer, fiddle with them, print them out, trace them down, that kind of thing. Great for compostion work, too.
ReplyDeleteI still like this guy's attitude :D And I love the cleaness of your sketch, such surety of line. Love your stuff.
Nutty
(not so clean of line :D)
Kristin I loved this whole concept sooo much. Thanks for sharing the original thought and final sketch. I do agree, the 2nd was is the best! I like the bigger head, he's so handsome! hee!! have a great sunday, andf thanks again for a great PPF! xo
ReplyDeletegreat tip, I didn't know a photocopier could do all that! It's very effective.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it IS better! I do that sometimes, too, but I just use my scanner and software since I don't have a photocopier.
ReplyDeleteI do see the difference and agree, it's better! Love your sketch!
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful to see the difference. I like them both, but I think I like the change you made. Fun to think of doing that by shrinking and expanding things... A wonderful character.
ReplyDeleteYes, the 10% enlargement/reduction made all the difference to the final painting. Love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a genius idea Mr Bond...
ReplyDeleteoh this is so cool I love it and what a clever concept!!!! neat to see them side by side!!! wonderful work!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas! Love the cats expression, should I? shouldn't I?
ReplyDeleteThe small change made a big impact I think. It went from looking like a young cat to a much more mature looking cool cat with a bigger head. So Bond... love the fish in the martini glass!
ReplyDeleteBig Bond fan here and I especially love this one. The adjustments you made increased his coolness by about 50%.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tip!!! Thank you so much for sharing that. You are so clever. Very cool cat!!!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry I did not get over to Paint Party Friday this week. But I am going to make a big effort to do it this week.
I love seeing how you think! And hearing about your techniques. Great way to adjust it. The subtle difference did have a big impact.
ReplyDeleteYou did a fabulous job with him!
Nice design!
ReplyDeleteSo cool that you know how to do that! I can totally see the difference! I love this drawing and can't wait to see this suave fellow in color! How has your week been? So sorry to have missed out on Paint Party Friday, my last friday just went to the birds, and I will be gone this coming Friday, but hope to participate the following Friday!
ReplyDeleteWishing you a creative and peaceful week to come!
Smiles
Great idea and fabulous sketch... so glad that PPF was a success and nice to meet so many new people... I've got the bubbly on ice for next Friday...
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful and fun sketch! either way it looks great!
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the process and you willingness to tweek portions to get the image just right. You have a great dedication to your craft. I do the same thing with my sketches and find that it really loosens me up in that early phase. I don't use the copier though, I can grab elements in Photoshop and digitally paste them together...but same concept.
ReplyDeleteaaah, what a fantastic idea..and such a time saver! Thankyou for sharing :)x
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Great idea and your sketch is awesome. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteYou're right! The didfference is subtle, but striking!
ReplyDeleteOh Kristin, that is quite funny! I love the fish in the glass; very creative my dear!
ReplyDeleteHow fun is this!! The bit of difference made a huge difference in style. Love that little fish.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful. It is amazing how a little difference makes a difference :)
ReplyDeleteWould love to see your process from here. hugs

ReplyDeleteI enjoy seeing the process of how various artists work. Great idea with the copier.
ReplyDeleteDarla
Love this so much and what a great idea of photocopying the head to make it larger! So resourseful !
ReplyDeletegreat post - this is hilarious...you should add the painting into the whimsy pool
ReplyDeleteI can see the difference. Amazing. I use my photocopier for changing the size of drawings too. Love that convenience.
ReplyDeleteI think you're absolutely brilliant. I really enjoy coming to your site to see what you've come up with. :)
ReplyDeleteFantastic idea of using the copier to enlarge and shrink parts to make them match better. Well done. Will look awesome as a painting in the future.
ReplyDeleteWow, that does make a difference! Really interesting work. I love it!
