Sunday Sketches... Shaken Not Stirred

This was the sketch I originally did for this week's painting, "Shaken not Stirred".  The sketch was okay, but I thought it could use a little tweaking.  I thought it might be better if the head was larger and the body was smaller, but I didn't want to re-draw the whole thing... So, I used a photocopier to alter my sketch (it is such a fabulous tool for artists).  I made the head 10% larger and the body 10% smaller, then I glued the pieces together in my sketchbook (making the neck smaller too).

Voila!  A drawing that I felt comfortable turning into a painting.

The physical difference isn't huge, but I think the impact is!

Don't forget to visit Sophia's blog to see what my friends have been up to this week!

  1. I never thought of enlarging and reducing a finished sketch...great tip, thanks!

Love the larger head on the cat, btw. It makes a difference.

  2. I'm with Ileana, I would have never thought of using a copier. I would have redrawn the whole thing. lol

Great sketch and the painting turned out very nicely.

  5. Mwhahahaha! Isn't technology wonderful for creating shortcuts. I've been known to do do things like that. I scan them into the computer, fiddle with them, print them out, trace them down, that kind of thing. Great for compostion work, too.

I still like this guy's attitude :D And I love the cleaness of your sketch, such surety of line. Love your stuff.

    Nutty
(not so clean of line :D)

  8. You're right, it IS better! I do that sometimes, too, but I just use my scanner and software since I don't have a photocopier.

  10. It is wonderful to see the difference. I like them both, but I think I like the change you made. Fun to think of doing that by shrinking and expanding things... A wonderful character.

  14. The small change made a big impact I think. It went from looking like a young cat to a much more mature looking cool cat with a bigger head. So Bond... love the fish in the martini glass!

  21. I love seeing the process and you willingness to tweek portions to get the image just right. You have a great dedication to your craft. I do the same thing with my sketches and find that it really loosens me up in that early phase. I don't use the copier though, I can grab elements in Photoshop and digitally paste them together...but same concept.
