AEDM: Day 3

"Amy Cat"
(a tribute to our teacher)
acrylics on a dryer sheet attached to cardstock

Today I had the pleasure of painting along with Amy as she taught another free live workshop... It was like a live virtual paint party!  These workshops are a lot of fun and it is great to be painting and chatting with so many people I've met through blogging!

In addition to painting, today's workshop started with sewing. (Can you believe it Jenny?!?  I actually sewed something!  Sure it was just a little bit of a border, but it won't be long until I'm giving your fun elephant pattern a try!)  I sewed a dryer sheet onto a piece of cardstock, then painted on that.  I was originally going to sew a piece of fabric to the cardstock, but someone mentioned dryer sheets and I remembered that Becca uses dryer sheets in her art, so I thought I'd give it a try.  (I discovered that dryer sheets take paint pretty well, but the constant perfumey smell made me a bit queasy and gave me a headache... Lesson learned.)

The topic of conversation over at the Paint Party Friday blog this week is about why we buy the art that we buy...  I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to share some of the art that I have bought, been gifted, and won in giveaways.  I have created a board on pinterest with some of the art that I have in my house.  (If you'd like to see, click here.)

Are you on pinterest?  My friend Robin invited me to join a awhile ago and I fiddled around a bit, but over the past couple of weeks I have become a bit of a pinterest addict!  If you 're on pinterest let me know - I'd love to see what you're pinning!

  1. Hi Kristin!
It's funny how a lot of the art that you bought are some of the pieces that I have loved and admired.

    Your piece is so cute!
I have also seen people that make there entire painting out of dryer lint. Very cool.

Nelly just told me about Pinterest. I am going to have to check it out!!

  2. :)
    this is cool!

i have a pinterest account, but i'm not sure what it really is :)
but i do have one :)

i don't really buy too much art - i only seem to buy 'in person' - there is something about the concrete real life appeal of art... i have to buy it.

i know what you mean about dryer sheets. i love the idea of it, but i would need unscented ones. i'm funny about chemicals.
    i'm just strange that way.

    scents get to me.

...that being said, i LOVE when i'm walking past a residential area and i can smell laundry.. do you know what i mean? like, when you can smell the dryer vent pushing the fabric softener scent out.

it's weird. i think only women can smell it. men look at you funny when you say, "mmmm. someone is doing laundry..."

    xxa

  19. Love your kitty. When you said you painted on a dryer sheet my first thought was the smell would get to me and then I read it got to you too. Maybe unscented would work although I don't like the way they feel either. :o}

  26. I´m staying away from Pinterest, I´d spend every waking minute perusing beauty. :D
I have well over 150 photographs around our home, most taken by me. We also have some architectural plans (all UK buildings) and one Thomas The Tank Engine print. :D
Awesome colours but ... how do you paint and chat? I´d be dripping acrylics all over the keyboard! :D

  30. I see unscented dryer sheets in my future. I don't have much fabric hanging around but want to try this technique. I like to use "seventh generation" dryer sheets in collage - they are made of a brown textured paper and are eco-friendly. (got that tip from Corinne at Dosfishes). Your kitty is so awesome. loved getting a peek at your art collection. I pin stuff to pinterest all the time as a way of keeping track of inspiration. I've stayed away from browsing other people's boards because I would never ever leave and I spend too much time on the computer as it is.

  31. I was lucky enough to be in this class, too....the dreads you added to your cat crack me up...haha!

I would love being part of your party...but I always feel bad when I can't visit with everyone (weekends are the hardest time for me to be on the computer)...
    So many talented women here!

Thanks for the tips on the dryer sheets...woulda never thought of using them :P

Hope to see you in another class soon!

  38. I love your blue kitty! He looks like he would be at home guarding an Egyptian tomb. His headdress is wonderful. But he's not fierce like a sphinx because he has a butterfly tattoo.

Dryer sheets, sewing...I love all this creativity!

  40. Cool cat! Was your dryer sheet used? I've painted on used ones before, and most of the scent is gone by then. Painting on a new one would probably kill me!

I have a Pinterest account where I mostly pin home decorating ideas that I like. Melisa McCurley if you want to look me up.
